Oncology is the medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. A medical oncologist treats cancer using chemotherapy or other medications, such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. In addition, the medical oncologist specializes in treating complications of cancer, including pain, and coordinates multidisciplinary care with other cancer specialists such as radiation and surgical oncologists, in order to provide the most effective treatment possible. Most medical oncologists also provide hematology services. The hematologist specializes in diagnosing and treating benign as well as malignant disorders of the blood.
