FIU Health Travel Medicine Program

When planning for international travel and the experience of new places, faces, languages, and cultures, visitors to other countries need to take certain health precautions. Thanks to FIU Health’s new Travel Medicine Program , you can stay healthy no matter where you go. The program, which is offered at the Faculty Group Practice on the Modesto Maidique Campus, helps travelers 18 years and older prepare for and enjoy a safe and healthy journey, by offering comprehensive pre- and post-travel health services for individuals and groups.

Through computerized access to extensive travel health databases and utilizing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our staff provides comprehensive consultation for travelers, which are customized according to the destination, itinerary, planned activities, and medical history. Travelers will receive an official immunization record to keep with travel documents, along with a customized health and travel information packet. Each packet will include the health risks and requirements for the specific countries on the itinerary, consular information, and general travel health advice.
The Travel Medicine Program offers a variety of immunizations for preventable diseases that travelers may be exposed to in foreign countries, such as yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, typhoid, and polio, as well as other routine vaccinations for non-travelers.

The program’s clinical staff includes registered nurses with special training and expertise in travel medicine, under the direction of Dr. Carlos Torres-Viera, who is board-certified in Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine, and who works closely with the staff in all aspects of patient care.
